It’s a sad truth that most New Year’s resolutions will fail.
That’s why years ago, I decided to stop writing resolutions. Instead, I started to write goals. To some, this might sound like the same thing. To me, goals are more concrete.
For each goal, I make sure it’s measurable and actionable. I set up tasks and activities to accompany each goal. And I break my goals down into bite-sized pieces. The more I do this, the more likely they are to be achieved.
If you’re ready to get off the resolution merry-go-round, I highly recommend goal setting.
Here are four habits you can take on if you want to experience a breakthrough in setting, and accomplishing, goals for your love life:
- Get clear on what you want and need – Communicate what you want in love. What are your hopes? Your dreams? Write them on sticky notes and place them in places where you’ll be reminded to focus.
- Create a morning routine – Before the day gets away from you, start it off with being centered and focused. You might do this through prayer or meditation. Maybe you have an exercise routine that helps you feel grounded. Do something besides checking your phone, computer, or TV first thing when you wake up. Let the first thoughts in your mind be what you want to achieve in love instead of what everyone else is demanding of you.
- Find support – It can be difficult to ask for help, but if you want to be successful you have to let people rally around you. Not only will those people help you get where you want to go, you’ll also be helping them succeed as well. A rising tide lifts all boats, as they say!
- Pick 3 things to do each day (that you wouldn’t normally do) – Try something new. That can be a food, exercise class, or a driving route. Let yourself experience some discomfort and maybe even a little fear as you get out of your comfort zone.
Your life won’t radically change overnight, but you might just find that next January you are amazed when you look back at what you’ve done over the course of the year.
